Keep Your In-Flight Beauty Game - Strong! beauty Tip Of The Week #25

Have you ever watched an international flight deplaning? Especially a good, long flight?
It's like watching a real live episode of The Walking Dead, without the bloody bits.
Passengers tend to look a uniform shade of ashen grey, their hair is all over the place - in general they look like hell.

When my plane lands I'm always either bouncing straight into work or into some fun social engagement, so I need to have my game face on. Or at least not look like a vampire. for me it's all about which beauty products I take on board with me. This morning I'm packing for the Glam Italia 2 Tour which takes off tomorrow, so today we are looking at some Cabin Baggage Beauty.

Inflight-Beauty

Here is what is coming on board with me:

Cabin-Baggage-beauty
Beauty products going in my cabin baggage

Starting with skin care. I always fly with no makeup on. Makeup looks ghastly at the end of a long flight, so I work my skin care game throughout the flight and then either put on makeup an hour before landing, or in the restroom after we de-plane.

Read my post about beating Jet Lag here

Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist is a lifesaver. I spritz this on before the flight and then as needed during the flight for extra hydration and nourishment.

I give my skin a liberal coating of both Tatcha Ageless Revitalizing Cream and Tatcha Ageless Revitalizing Eyecream to bind in the moisture. I either buy them in travel size, or get them in sampler boxes from the Tatcha website. These items are from the Mother's Day Gift Set I received this year.

Tatcha Gold Camellia Lip Balm keeps lips from drying out and cracking and also feels incredibly luxe.

Don't forget your hands - they suffer from the lack of water in the air too. Keep your hands looking lovely with Tatcha Indigo Handcream (also available in travel size).

Instead of looking ghostly when you land, apply a sheer coat of Makeup Forever Skin Equalizer primer to give your skin an even surface, followed by Makeup Forever Lift Concealer (if you have dark rings under your eyes) and a little MAC BB cream to bring back some color into your complexion and get rid of the long flight pallor.
I love Inglot AMC Liquid Blush. If you don't have access to Inglot grab a Nars Multiple Stick in a warm tone like Portofino.

A full face of makeup isn't necessary, just focus on your brows, cheeks, lashes and lips. Givenchy makes a good brow pencil, I've used the Shu Uemura lash curler for years, and I'm a die-hard fan of Diorshow Blackout Mascara. I use a flesh toned pencil from Philosophy in the water line to brighten my eyes

When you are looking washed out your best friend is a pair of dark sunglasses and a bright lip.
Reds can be a little too fierce so I always go for the vibrant pop of color you get from bold pinks and fuchsias. Try MAC lipstick in Impassioned after shaping your pout with MAC lip liner in Vino.

Everyone smells awful after 8 hours+ in a cabin with recirculating air. More importantly your hair smells stale.
Oribe Cote D'Azur Hair Refresher Spray smells like heaven and totally refreshes your locks. (you can buy it in travel size too)

All these items fit easily into my see thru Miami Blue cosmetics pouch from Stephanie Johnson.

Can you believe Katy Perry got the Carine Roitfeld treatment? I'm going to read all about it in the September issue of Harpers Bazaar during my flight.

Destination Honeymoon ~ Which Beauty Products You Should Pack

Last September I shot a story for
about which beauty items you should pack
to take on your honeymoon.
If you are getting married this year, or if you are traveling, this is a great guide for you.
Here is the Phoenix Bride and Groom Magazine article, reposted.

Bon Voyage!

Corinna Cooke on an Easy Honeymoon Beauty Routine

“I’m always getting on a plane to somewhere! Whether it’s a shoot across the country or across the world, I always follow these four beauty travel tips. They work perfectly for your honeymoon too!”
Corinna Cooke

Honeymoon-Travel-Beauty-Packing-What-To-Pack
1
Travel Bags. I like my beauty products to go in my cabin baggage, so they arrive at the same destination as I do, when I do! I use see-through cosmetic travel bags from Stephanie Johnson. They are beautiful and chic, are easy to take through airport security and are sturdy enough to protect all my beauty products. I also take them to the beach – one with sunscreens and a separate one for any post-beach hair and makeup goodies. I don’t want sandy bottles of tanning products mixed in with my hair and lip products, and I like being able to see what’s in each bag. Remember all your liquid products have to be 3 fluid ounces or less to go in your carry on baggage.

2
Honeymoon-Travel-Beauty-Packing-Verso-Skin-CareThe Skin Care Equation. Think about the climate you are traveling to before you pack. If you live somewhere dry, like Phoenix, and are going somewhere humid, such as a beach honeymoon, you will need to change to lighter skin care products. I travel with Verso skin care products (thoughtfully sized at 3 fluid ounces or less). I add a broad spectrum sunblock with the highest SPF I can find (a sunburned face isn’t exactly honeymoon glam), an eye-makeup remover to dissolve waterproof mascara, and a soothing face mask like luxurious Tatcha Luminous Deep Hydration Lifting Mask to keep skin looking lovely.

3
The Makeup Story.

The key to travel makeup is to keep it simple. You don’t want to spend your honeymoon in front of a makeup mirror and you don’t want to weigh your bags down with more cosmetics than necessary. Opt for a fresh-faced look with a BB Cream instead of a heavy foundation, pack a little something for your brows, a bronzer to keep you looking beachy, and a soft blush to add a little color. Take one color story for your eyes. I like a soft goldy/bronzy look as it goes with everything, always looks gorgeous and you can dress it up or down. Waterproof mascara and a great eyeliner in espresso brown or a deep plummy-grape complete the perfect travel eye makeup story. Lastly pack two lip options: a soft, kissable glossy lip in a gentle tone and one bold color for a va-va-voom lip to knock ‘em dead on a dressy night out.

4
The Hair Story. A climate change can make for a really bad hair day, so you want to have some rescue options with you. A little hair decadence feels divine, so I travel with Oribe products. I pack the Oribe single-use travel shampoo and conditioner packs because they are fabulous, smell divine and take up absolutely no space at all. Oribe’s travel-sized Anti Humidity Spray tames any flyaways or crazy humidity hair, Dry Texturizing Spray is fantastic if you need a little post-hat-hair lift, and Apres Beach Spray gives you great beachy-looking waves when you don’t actually have any. I also love the Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Oil both to make hair glossy and shiny, and also to protect color and keep the ends from getting destroyed by sun, surf and wind.

New Travel Bags from Stephanie Johnson

If you are starting to work out and diet to get ready for summer, and planning summer vacations, spring break getaways, long weekend mini-breaks, or a honeymoon its a good time to start thinking about how you will be traveling your makeup, skin care and haircare products.

Chic air travel

I travel all the time both for work and for pleasure, and being that I am a makeup artist and a devotee of makeup, skin care and hair products its really important to me that I have an organized system to move everything around the country and around the world, and have it all arrive in one piece. Anyone who has ever traveled anywhere knows what a nuisance it is to arrive somewhere and find your makeup has broken, lotions and potions have leaked, or even worse the debris from this has migrated into your suitcase.

I have found that the key is to have incredibly well made, structured, strong cosmetic bags that are designed to hold up to the rigors of travel. Years ago I started to realize that all the celebrities I was working with traveled with beautiful, stylish travel cosmetic bags by Stephanie Johnson. Allowing for the fact that my actors and musicians traveled even more than I did, I knew they had to be onto something!

Gelato in Turin

Consequently I too became a devotee of Stephanie Johnson travel makeup bags. I have used them for years, and if you have been a follower of this blog you will know that I have blogged about them frequently.

I'm busy organizing spending the summer in Italy again this year, so was super excited to see the new Stephanie Johnson Torino collection.
Stephanie Johnson Torino Collection

Isn't it lovely?
It's an update of the Turin collection. The gelato hued zigzag weave is offset by a luscious raspberry patent leather trim and raspberry tassle zipper pulls. Inside the lining is fresh lemon.

Each bag is available individually, or if you're like me you can choose an assortment, or the full collection.
I sometimes use the smaller bags as chic little clutch purses when I go out at night, and love to use the smaller bags as cosmetic purses inside my handbag year round.

Here are the bags individually

I use the Jenny Train Case to death when I travel. Its super sturdy and is easy to organize all my items and see them clearly.

Hanging bags are ideal for travel. You can clearly see all your things and don't lose valuable counter space.

The Large Fiona Trapezoid sits upright on your bathroom counter, and is surprisingly spacious.

The Fiona Dome Cosmetic case slips into your handbag and is nice and slim. The extended zipper opening enables you to not only fit a lot inside, but to access it easily, as it opens wider than most bags.

The Mary Brush Case hold both makeup and brushes

And a girl has to have a color co-ordinated iPad case when she travels!

For those of you getting married this spring/summer, Stephanie Johnson Travel Cosmetic bags are ideal to take on your honeymoon, and also make deliciously stylish and chic bridesmaids gifts.

Everyone knows that kisses taste better in Italy!! ~ Kissing in Turin...

If you are a travel enthusiast (like me!) or if you just enjoy looking at other people's travel, Stephanie Johnson has a fantastic blog that gives you a window into her chic and exciting life of travel, called
Stephanie Johnson Style Compass. In her blog she introduces you to fabulous places to go, where to stay and what to wear. Last year my entire wardrobe for Capri was based on the advice in Stephanie's blog!

If you are an Italophile (like me!) and want to look at life in Turin, another blog I adore is
All Roads Lead To Pecetto. This is the lifestyle blog of an expat American girl now living in Turin with her handsome Italian man. It doesn't get much better than that!

Stephanie Johnson Style Compass Blog

I don't just love to travel.
I live to travel.
The road to the international airport is my favorite road traveled.
It means I'm on my way to another great adventure.
For years I've traveled with Stephanie Johnson cosmetic bags
and I've written about them in magazines everywhere too.

Now I'm also addicted to Stephanie's blog:
a fabulous and stylish look
into her exotic life of world travel,
where she stays, what she wears, where to shop and dine
and fun things to do.

Today I'm re-posting her insider guide to Hong Kong.
Never know when you're going to need it...

Destination Hong Kong

I’ve been to Hong Kong many times over the years and this last trip was full of cultural surprises and new culinary adventures.  In keeping with my theme of getting outside my comfort zone this year, I shook things up and stayed in a new hotel in a different part of town and tried everything new.

STAY
I’d gladly hop the 15 hour flight to return to The Upper House.  The place is perfection.  Of course, it didn’t hurt that they upgraded me upon arrival to a 1000+ square foot suite. (American Express platinum card, y’all.  Get on it!)

From my arrival in a Lexus RH450 Hybrid with full moon roof to view the Hong Kong skyline, to Wi-Fi so I could FaceTime with my daughter, I was hooked.
Check-in was in the room where a large tote bag full of wrapped presents waited for me (swear), and the minibar (or more rightly dubbed, maxi bar) had free treats, sodas, beer and juices for my enjoyment.  A huge glass jar of m&m’s, anyone?  And yes I said FREE.

The room was such a zen paradise that I’m not a skilled enough wordsmith to do it justice.  I’ve never slept better and that’s a statement considering the jet lag issue.
The Upper House is redefining the guest experience.  Rather than a reception and concierge desk, their staff is knowledgeable on many matters and is encouraged to walk the extra mile.  One staff number did just that.  When I asked about a dinner spot he literally walked out the front door (without telling anyone!) and escorted me down the bend, across the road, to a neighborhood restaurant.  I can promise you will feel at home here and likely won’t want to leave.  Flawless.

I’ve been to Hong Kong numerous times before and always stay at the Intercontinental  on the Kowloon side.  The views of Victoria Harbor are worth the stay alone and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss those 6am Tai Chi classes by the pool.

EAT
The China Club has a dress code (love that) and some devilishly good cuisine.  Cubed filet with fried garlic chips is a house favorite and mine too.  Stay for the tea show in the main dining room where a man ‘dances’ with his teapot while pouring tea, and watch the chef toss dough sky-high and make noodles out of it . . . with his fingers.

I love Hutong as much for its food as its traditional Beijing decor.  I’m a repeat offender, you will be too.

For a more casual lunch try Zen for dim sum in a mall atmosphere.  Or go local and eat the best dumplings and noodles in the fabric market on the Kowloon side.  Sorry the name is only printed in Chinese characters (=real deal!), but find it at 192 Tai Nan Street in the Sham Shui Po district.  Formerly housed under a tarp on the street, this delicious noodle bar “got rich” and now has a restaurant environment indoors . . . good for them, but I miss a stool on the street!

I would go to Sevva for a rooftop drink before dinner and try Zuma for sushi prepared in an open kitchen setting.  After too many dumplings you may be craving something from home, so try Gaia for a green salad and a thin crust pizza.

After watching the light show from Kowloon and walking the Canton Road, I took the Star Ferry back to Central and popped into Inagiku for dinner at The Four Seasons Hotel.  An instant favorite with Harbor views, and a tempura and tappanyaki bar.  I learned how to eat tempura the Chinese way (with two varieties of salt) and the Hong Kong way (with tempura dipping sauce).

DO
Do take local transport!  I loved the trolley, trams, Star Ferry and the MTR.   A great way to see the city and easy to use.
The trip highlight for me was the awesome sight of the Big Buddha on Lantau Island and the gorgeous cable car ride to get there.  I only wish I’d known that you can hike to the Buddha . . . the hiking trail winds up green hills on wooden boardwalks, stairs and earth.  Make it a day trip and hike the peak taking in the nature and views . . . a nice respite from the city lights.

Take the junk out for a sail on Victoria Harbor and be sure to see the light show from the Kowloon side at 8pm nightly.  Back in Central I walked endlessly through the Soho and Lan Kwai Fun neighborhoods enjoying the local market stands, down the Hollywood road and up Pottinger Lane where I bought my daughter tiny bows for her hair.

I didn’t get to it this trip, but seeing Hong Kong from the Peak via tram is a must.  Go at dusk when you can see all the lights.
After a long day be sure to check out FOOT (yes that is really the name) on the Queen’s Road Central for an authentic reflexology treatment.  A fun Hong Kong experience to have your feet rubbed while lounging in a recliner in a dark room among a dozen other people.  I went twice.

SHOP
I love the local markets, and Stanley Market  is great for tourists wanting to stock up on silk pj’s, jade objects and other Chinese trinkets.
If you are a serious fashionista then by all means hit Lane Crawford, Joyce and Harvey Nichols.  All their holiday windows were gorgeous and rivaled Fifth Avenue back home.  (Loved an entire gown complete with train made of red clothes pins!)
