Bridal Beauty Tip #11 Should You Wear Facial SPF On Your Wedding Day?

Brides are always asking me whether they should skip facial SPF on their wedding day.

There is a lot of noise out there about facial  SPF's and flashback with flash photography, which makes many brides panic and think their faces will flare white in their (super expensive!) wedding pictures.

Because I am such a die-hard facial SPF obsessive, (I like to think of my self as an SPF enthusiast, but really, who am I kidding??)
I would never in a million years even consider being out in the sunshine without a facial SPF myself, so there is no way I would ever advise a bride to go get herself a good burn on her big day.
But I do have some rules when it comes to the subject:

1. No Moisturizer Containing SPF
There are two main reasons that I am anti moisturizers that contain SPF.
Firstly they are deceiving. Most girls don't apply a large dollop of moisturizer and then work it in evenly across their entire face, throat and decolletage. It takes a thick, even coating to get the advertised SPF value - you may think you are applying SPF 20 but actually may only be getting random patches of SPF  2.
Secondly I don't know what the active ingredients are. And for the most part I'm not interested in wasting time on a wedding day googling the bride's moisturizer to see what the SPF ingredients are.
They probably are going to involve zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, the two main culprits in SPF flashback.
I prefer to use my own moisturizers or hydrators on my bride's skin, so that I can get the skin prepped the way I want it, have no greasy film on the surface of the skin, and then apply my own, photo friendly facial SPF in a layer that will protect the skin properly (otherwise the whole exercise is a waste of time) and that will not flare under flash.

2. No Foundation Containing SPF
Mostly for the same reasons as the moisturizer equation, but also because the foundations I use are pro foundations, and don't come with SPF. I need my bride to look flawless for 12 to 14 hours, so I use foundations that are designed to last that long, look gorgeous on camera, but also look like beautiful skin to anyone standing close or leaning in for a kiss.
My personal feeling is that if I were to go after the SPF protection on the bottle I would need a thick, opaque layer of foundation, which is the exact opposite of the look I'm going for.

3. Use a free standing facial SPF.
By that I mean it is it's own product, not built into anything else.
When you use a freestanding SPF you are completely aware of where you are applying it, and how evenly you are applying it. You actually can get the protection advertised on the product.
I have two main facial SPF products that I use not only on weddings, but also on any outdoor shoot, be it with models or actresses, or anyone else. I like them for the protection, I like that they don't leave any greasy residue, and I love that they never, ever flashback.
SPF-that-Doesn't-flare-with-flash-photography

The first is Kiehls Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+
Oil free, super lightweight, broad spectrum (protection against both UVA and UVB rays) with a patented photo-stabilizing technology, this one not only gives you long lasting protection, but is weightless. Some facial SPF's feel heavy, I like that this one feels like it disappears into the skin

The second is Neutrogena Dry Touch With Helioplex SPF 85
This is the product that I wear 365 days per year. I buy the highest SPF number they have on the shelf - If they have 100, I buy SPF 100, if the highest they have is SPF 75. I buy SPF 75.

Neutrogena-Dry-touch-With-Helioplex

There is some debate about the efficacy of anything over SPF 30, but the way I see it with sun damage being the leading cause of skin aging, and with my desire to completely avoid melanoma and carcinoma, if there is so much as a whisper of a chance that there might just possibly be more protection in a bottle of SPF 85 than in SPF 30, you can count me in!
Neutrogena's product is definitely heavier than the Kiehls product, but it's dry touch finish is perfect for makeup.

4. If You Insist
If you insist on using your existing facial SPF that has flare potential, you can minimize the flashback by setting your foundation with a loose, color pigmented powder like Makeup Forever Super Matte Powder, which is a staple in my pro kit.

5. If You're Still Not Convinced...
Think about what time of day you will be outdoors having pictures taken. If your pictures are happening after 3:30 when the sun is  starting to soften a little (this does not apply to Phoenix, where the sun is white hot until much later), and you really don't want to risk wearing a sunscreen, you can probably get away with not wearing it. Personally, I would always wear SPF, but that's just me...

Beauty Tip Of The Week #11 ~ 5 Reasons I Love Yoga

Breathe in faith, breathe out fear.

Yoga-For-Beauty

I'm obsessed with yoga.
When I can go to class 5 days per week, I feel amazing.
Problem is I'm often working 60-80 hours per week, and just can't get to class. And I barely get time to practice at home.

But I am convinced that the regular practice of yoga is one of the greatest beauty tips ever.

5 Reasons I Love Yoga

                      1. The Zen Factor.
YogaOutlet.comIn a hectic, fast paced life, that hour or so of controlled movement and breathing is heaven. A peaceful,  zenned out, stress-free face is a thing of beauty.

2. Breathe it on in, love it on out.
An hour focused on breath is a wonderful thing. (90 minutes is even better). Total focus on the breath helps get oxygen to every cell in your body. Every cell in your body benefits from oxygen, and with yoga breathing your skin glows and you feel wonderful.

3. Shapely Shoulders
Consistent and faithful practice of yoga gives you lovely, shapely arms, shoulders and upper back, and everything looks great with nice shoulders! Dresses, blouses, tanks and tee's all drape beautifully from and look gorgeous with nicely shaped shoulders. Even if you are packing a little extra junk in the trunk, you can offset it and draw all the attention away from it with a lovely upper body.

4. Posture Perfect.
Constant practice of yoga naturally gives you lovely posture.
Your shoulders square, your strengthened core holds you upright, your tight hips and pelvis loosen, your new sense of balance changes the way you move.
Great posture speaks to inner confidence and calm, both of which are incredibly alluring.
You never see a truly stunning woman with bad posture. Virtually every major celebrity, model, and fashionista carry themselves with regal bearing.

5. Anyplace, Anytime
You don't have to go to the gym or to a yoga studio to practice yoga. At any time in any place you can drop and stretch, center yourself, calm yourself, give yourself balance, and get relaxed.

Tell me what you love about yoga in the comments section below!

Breakfast Crepes On The Beach In Sicily

Crepes On The Beach.

My favorite breakfast in the world is crepes on the beach, in Sicily.

the best coffee in Sicily is at Il Girasole in Letojanni

If you follow this blog you will already know that my favorite place on earth to travel to is the spectacular island of Sicily.
Not only is Sicily staggeringly beautiful with a rich and layered history, but it also has some of the very best food in the world. Everything you eat has been grown within a few miles of where you are dining, in nutrient rich volcanic soil that creates a flavor explosion with every bite.
And you won't find anything even remotely resembling the heavy, greasy, "Sicilian" food that they serve in the US.

My home-base in Sicily is the lovely little town of Letojanni, which sits adjacent to Taormina on Sicily's east coast, between Messina and Catania.
Unlike the picturesque town of Taormina, which is perhaps the most tourist-rich spot in Sicily, and therefore full of high priced souvenir shops costly accommodations and expensive places to eat, Letojanni is a small beach town that does cater beautifully to travelers but at the same time lets you feel that you are among the locals.

Taormina-Letojanni-Sicily

Letojanni sits just a side-step to the left of Taormina, on the Messina side. From your beach chair at the lidos in Letojanni you can look up at the hill and see Taormina. From the Greek Theater in Taormina you can gaze down at the beach in Letojanni.

The beach directly outside the apartment I rent in Letojanni is stunning. The red umbrellas of the Lido Copacabana provide perfect contrast to the sparkling blue water of the Ionian Sea. I honestly just never, ever want to leave.

When my son and I are in Paris every day we walk from our apartment on the left bank to the Place de la Concord to our favorite creperie, then take our crepes into the Tuileries and sit on the very same bench, every single time, and eat them as slowly as possible. Because they are so incredibly good.
And because we really love crepes.

When we are in Sicily every morning the two of us walk along the beach in Letojanni to Il Girasole, where we order crepes and sit under the sun umbrellas on the beach, and look out over the Ionian Sea as we eat our breakfast. It’s my idea of heaven.

And in our humble crepe eating opinion, the crepes at Il Girasole Crepepperia on the beach in Letojanni, Sicily are the very best crepes in the world.

Once you have tried them there is no turning back. Your daily breakfast becomes a carb fest of crepes, complimented by the best coffee on earth. It is an early morning fortification that sets you up perfectly for a day of sightseeing, or a day on the beach.

I wouldn't miss it for the world! And if you are in Letojanni you can't miss it either - Il Girasole (The Sunflower) is a bright yellow restaurant/cafe on the beach about halfway through town.

Il Girasole is owned by my charming and very charismatic friend Giuseppe "Peppe" Tama’, who I just adore, and who adds definite eye candy to any meal you are eating.

Peppe is delightful and engaging, and he has built an entire crew who have a zest for life and a sense of fun, just like he does. Which is probably why his business does so well.

Not only do they make the best breakfast you’ve ever had, and serve the very best coffee in the world at Il Girasole, but during the day they have lunch food, and they also serve evening fare.

Speaking of evenings, when the day is done and everyone is out and about in Letojanni for la passeggiata (evening stroll) they wind up at Il Girasole for evening coffees, glasses of wine or limoncello, or for light snack fare. It is a delightful social hub, the perfect place to end another perfect day in Sicily.

Celebrities With Choppy, Bob Length Hairstyles

I was on an editorial shoot this week, and one of the girls from the magazine absolutely rocked everyone's world with her fantastic new haircut.
It was super modern, fun and ultra chic.

She started the day with a choppy, bob length cut, looking smooth and shiny, and then part way through the day the hairstylist on set (who had actually done this stunning haircut the week before) took an oval wand curler to the cut and turned it into this super modern, beachy wave. It was fresh, it was fun and hands down out of all of us - magazine peeps, models and glam squad, she had the most fashion forward, sexy hair.

I am really attached to my long hair so I will probably never make the cut, but I had to start googling others who have.
Check out these celebrities with fabulous, choppy, bob length haircuts, and maybe this spring you too will go for the cut.

International Vogue Covers April 2015

How fabulous that blogger extraordinaire Chiara Ferragni has the cover of Vogue Espana this month.
I think she is intriguing.
I was looking at the numbers on US Vogue ~ they average just over a million issues per month via subscriptions, and another 226,000 issues that sell on the newsstands.
Chiara has 3.3 million instagram followers, which means she has a greater reach than US Vogue.
Do you think Anna Wintour maybe missed the boat when she let Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have the cover last year? It would appear the smart move would have been to go after Chiara instead...
Here are 12 international Vogue covers for April 2015
