8 Foods You Should Never Eat Before You Fly

Are you traveling over the holidays? (or ever?)
Making good or informed choices about what you eat pre-flight can make all the difference in the world to how you feel both during the flight and after it.
And with the inevitable oversold holiday flights, bad weather delays, long lines in airports full of angry and tired passengers, you need every advantage that you can give yourself to not just survive the ordeal, but keep your zen, avoid "jet bloat", not be the stinky passenger, and arrive feeling good.

Check out this list of 8 foods that you should never eat before you fly:

Fried or Fast Foods

Airports are full of fast food joints and restaurants offering low quality and fried foods. Although you may already be wary of hitting up McDonalds pre-flight you also need to avoid the fried foods on the menu at the better restaurants in the airport.
Your body already has a hard time digesting food at 35,000 feet, add to that the trouble the body has processing saturated fats and you've got yourself the perfect recipe for heartburn and upset stomach. Eating saturated fat can constrict blood flow and raise your risk of DVT.
Fast foods and fried foods are generally high in sodium too, causing swelling in the hands, feet, ankles and lower legs.

Cruciferous Vegetables

image via livestrong.com

After takeoff the air pressure in the cabin decreases, causing the cabin air to expand by around 30%. This can cause swallowed air and gases in the stomach and small intestine to expand, leading to an uncomfortable, bloated feeling. Minimize the effect of this by avoiding broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, cabbage, and other cruciferous vegetables.

Legumes

image via naturessunshine.com.au

Beans are well know for being another major gas and bloating culprit. Many types of beans and other legumes naturally contain indigestible complex sugars that can lead to onboard bloating.
Do yourself and everyone else on the plane a favor, and avoid eating legumes before you fly!

Sugar Free Gum And Candy

Sugar free products contain artificial sweeteners, and unfortunately the human body is not designed to process synthetic sugars very well. They can cause gas and bloating, and can even have a laxative effect - not what you want on a full flight with only a couple of bathrooms! Check the warning label on the packet before you buy, or just play safe and avoid artificial sweeteners before and during your flight.

Garlic

Garlic contains compounds that are absorbed both into your bloodstream and your lungs, so even if you brush your teeth you are exhaling garlic and it is seeping out through your pores. If you have ever sat next to a garlic-y passenger you will know how nauseating it is to smell it all flight long. Don't be that person...

Alcohol

image via smartertravel.com

Alcohol is dehydrating anyway, but combine it with the low humidity in a pressurized cabin and you can become even more dehydrated, which can make you feel miserable and give you headaches for days.
Do yourself a favor and skip alcohol pre-flight as well as during your flight.

Carbonated Drinks

carbonated-drinks

Carbonated drinks like soda and beer are major contributors to bloating. Picture the bubbles as tiny balloons that will end up in your stomach, and then rapidly expand when the air pressure changes. Not comfortable!

Airplane Provided Water, Ice, Coffee Or Tea

It's important to stay hydrated while you fly, but you are better off bringing your own bottled water than grabbing a drink from the beverage cart. Tests done by the EPA showed that one out of every seven planes had tank water that did not meet federal standards, and contained bacteria like E.coli.
Although beverage carts might give you "bottled" water from a large bottle, that bottle may have been refilled using the tank water.
Coffee and tea are often made from the same tank water, which is usually not heated to a high enough temperature to kill germs.

What this means to you and me is that we get the most technologically advanced, most high performance products from Korea.
You and I can't necessarily pop in to one of the many, many skin care emporiums lining the streets of Seoul, but we can order them online from Palo Alto based Memebox.

Memebox is the leading Korean beauty retailer, carrying curated boxes & individual items

Through Memebox Korean skin care is entirely affordable, much more so than even the most mediocre skin care sold in department stores. So you get to save money while you get extreme quality, look younger and have firmer, clearer skin. Win win win!

Korean girls are makeup obsessed too, so through Memebox you can order the fabulous makeup products that they use, either buying pieces individually or through their fun pre-made boxes.

I have a big order ready to place for myself, but I'm waiting for Black Friday to place it because they have amazing deals happening with discounts up to 80% off!

For the first time this year Memebox is offering Vault boxes in their Black Friday sale. Vault boxes are larger than the regular boxes (they contain 16 items) and contain some of the most popular products. There will be two types of vault boxes, each massively discounted at 60% off.
One will have makeup and skin care and a retail value of $363, but will be on sale for $149!!

6 Fabulous Thanksgiving Lipstick Shades

Do you have your Thanksgiving makeup plan thought out yet?

Fall-Lipsticks

When I'm planning the outfit and the makeup there are a couple of things I take into account.

Firstly I don't want to diminish the power of the run-up-to-Christmas makeup and it's fierce red lips by bringing them out at Thanksgiving. All the colors surrounding you at Thanksgiving trend toward the harvest, with burnt oranges, sage greens and deep cranberries and aubergines, so a red lip is at best wasted and at worst really out of place. I feel the same about my favorite magentas and fucshias. I save them for a better outing.

Secondly I think about what the event is doing. If your role is just to swan around glamorously with a glass of champagne in your hand, a bold lip is killer. But if the event is primarily about food, such as sitting down eating Thanksgiving dinner, hopefully with a table full of great people, a bold lip may just be the enemy.

Even if you are wearing a long-wear formula. Long-wear's may hold color, but by nature they are drying, and if you've ever sat opposite someone at dinner who is wearing a long-wear lipstick you've probably noticed that their mouth looks kind of icky and their lip looks pretty unappealing by the end.

So what to do this Thanksgiving?

Here is the Thanksgiving makeup plan:

Start by focusing on your skin. Get glowing, dewy skin by using a silicone based foundation.
Next add in a cream blush. Cream blushes are lovely. They make the skin look alive and healthy. Choose a shade that is warm, complements your skin tone and works with what you are wearing.
Cold, blue based pinks may not be your best bet.
Try Laura Mercier Creme Blush which you can order online at Nordstrom

Laura-Mercier-Creme-Blush

With your complexion looking gorgeous, draw attention upwards to your eyes. Give yourself a well defined brow, a slightly smokier eye, and tons of mascara. I'm back to being obsessed with DiorShow Blackout mascara
Instead of a grey, black or navy smokey eye look for a copper bronze. I love working with cream shadows like
Charlotte Tilbury Eyes To Mesmerize in Marie Antoinette.
Cream shadows can give a beautifully satin finish without being too reflective like many shimmery powder shadows.
Charlotte Tilbury Eyes To Mesmerize in Marie Antoinette
While writing this post I've been clicking around on the Charlotte Tilbury website, and just ordered her Colour Chameleon Eye Shadow Pencils, and just ordered two shades, Gold Digger and Enchanting Indigo. They will be here in time for Thanksgiving, so I guess I have my eye game sorted!

Charlotte-Tilbury-Color-Chameleon
Finally, it's time to work your lip game. Opt for something with a nice sheen to it, but not a super gloss. Satin finishes look luscious and are really friendly to chapped, dry, sore winter lips.

Holiday Gift Guide - Great Books To Give

Holiday Gift Guide ~ Great Books To Give

original image found on theberry.com

Books make great holiday gifts. What's not to love about a winter afternoon spent curled up on the couch with blankets and pillows and a good book? Drinking tea or hot mulled wine and exploring a new world within the pages - it's perfect!

Here are.  fabulous reads that make wonderful gifts

Gods And Kings, The Rise And Fall Of Alexander McQueen and John Galliano by Dana Thomas.

The-Rise-And-Fall-Of-John-Galliano-And-Alexander-Mcqueen

I went to a soiree that Dana Thomas gave to celebrate this book and it was wonderful. As an insider who knew both Lee McQueen and John Galliano she had fascinating insight into their lives, their creative forces and the business machine that ate both of them up. Initially New York based, the author has lived in Paris for the past 15 years. Which is thrilling in and of itself.

Blow By Blow, The Story Of Isabella Blow by Detmar Blow

Isabella-Blow

Isabella Blow was both a legendary figure in fashion and a very important one. She is credited with discovering both Alexander McQueen, and launching his career by buying his entire first collection, and also Philip Treacy who launched his career from the basement of her home.
Her 30 year career in fashion included being assistant to Anna Wintour at American Vogue as well as fashion editor at Tatler and The Sunday Times magazine.
Written by her husband after her death at age 48, this book gives a behind the scenes look at high society and fashion, as well as her incredible life and body of work.

This biography not only covers Vreeland's career as one of the most influential fashion editors ever, but also looks at her deeply unhappy childhood and the fearless, imaginative, hard working woman she became.
This biography is both interesting and inspiring.

Grace Coddington is easily one of the greatest fashion editors ever. The body of work she has completed with Anna Wintour is staggering and brilliant. This autobiography is fascinating and lovely. Just like Grace.

By the editors of Vice Magazine

Street-Fashion

For 17 years Vice magazine has been putting out hilariously captioned photos of street fashion, calling each a do or a don't. This is a laugh out loud book with some pretty interesting street style.

Anatomy Of A Disappearance by Hisham Matar

This beautifully, beautifully written story about a young boy orphaned when his father is disappeared in the middle of the night in Geneva. The story crosses Egypt, Switzerland and England, and weaves a tale of political intrigue fleshed out by the palpable aching of a teenage boy set adrift in the world.

Best Sellers

Depraved Heart by Patricia Cornwall is the 23rd book in the Kay Scarpetta series. Scarpetta books are always a great read.

A Banquet of Consequences by Elizabeth George.
It seems like forever since we last saw Thomas Lynley and Barbara Havers. I can't wait to get time to read this one!

The Girl On The Train by Paula Hawkins.
At this point I may just be the only person who hasn't  read this NY Times best seller, but there could still be someone on your list who loves books and hasn't read this one.
