How To Transition Your Hair From Winter To Spring

Now that spring is finally here,
its time to say goodbye to your drab winter locks,
and get your hair ready for the new season.

Sometimes its hard to know quite where to start,
so here is how to transition your hair from winter to spring
in four easy steps.

1.) Give it a cut, and make it a big one.

After months of dull weather, hats and air-conditioning hair starts to look dried out, the ends look split and
tired, and overall your 'do looks a little lifeless, so there is no time like the present to give it a really good, substantial cut. Spring is a great time to either go for that whole new look you've been thinking about, or if you're staying with the same style as you had before, get a really good cut, and unload all the excess weight and damage that you've been dragging around.

2.) Invest in some really good treatment masks and/or deep treatment conditioners.

Ask your stylist which products are best for your type of hair, and which products are actually going to penetrate the shaft of the hair. A conditioning treatment that just sits on the surface of the hair shaft isn't going to do you that much good.
Its also a great time to think about a keratin treatment or a Brazilian blowout to keep hair smooth, manageable and luscious as the warm weather, sunshine and humidity approach.

3.) Change up your products.
I love Moroccan Oil products
Sometimes change is good! Your hair may have become used to the products in your current regimen, or maybe it requires something different for the new season. Again talk to your stylist and get recommendations for which products are best for your particular hair type.
Using the right products can make all the difference when it comes to how your cut or color wears.

4.) Change up your color.

Trade out lowlights for highlights. Lighten, brighten and excite your winter look with color. Work with colors that maximize the shape of your cut, and that lighten and brighten your face.
Try something new, or enhance what you are already working with

How To Choose A Mascara

I always get asked how to choose the right mascara.

Perusing the endless options in mascara-land can be a little daunting, so here is my 3 step guideline:

1.) Know the formulations.
First up you need to identify your needs.

Short, stubby lashes? Go for a lengthening mascara.
Some lengthening mascaras contain nylon fibers which act like extensions on the lashes. Mascaras like Lancome Definicils use dense bristles wands to help you get more product dispersed at the end of the lashes, helping them to look longer.

Thin or lackluster lashes?
Opt for a thickening mascara to bulk up your lashes.
These formulations typically contain waxes and silicone polymers
which coat the lash and make it look denser.
Absolute favorite? Diorshow Blackout.

Dead straight lashes? - Curling mascaras contain waxes and resins that lift the lash at the tip. These formulas can work magic, especially when you use a good quality lash curler first.

Non Clumping mascaras contain silk extracts and glycerins to create a silkier, glossier lash.

2.) Know which style of wand you need.

A thick, bushy brush like Diorshow will create a thicker, denser lash.

Spikey plastic combs will give more separation to the lash.

Long, comb like wands give great definition, and lengthen the lashes, but won't help you to bulk up or thicken your lashes.

A spherical brush, like the Givenchy Phenomen'Eyes has bristles of all different lengths so that you can get all around each lash anywhere along the lashline. The application is a little trickier and more time consuming, but you can really customize your application and create the look you want.

Curved brushes help to lift and curl lashes by cupping
and curving the mascara along the natural shape of the eye.

3.) Avoid Waterproof Mascara

Unless you are planning on swimming or sobbing, skip waterproof mascara entirely.
They use synthetics to repel moisture, but are generally so harsh that over time your lashes thin and break.
They are also hard to remove, so if you do have to wear one, make sure you use a high quality eye makeup remover to take it off, and be super gentle - its easy to wind up scrubbing the delicate skin around the eyes, not only irritating it, but also fast tracking the aging process.
Instead use a water resistant formula that will bind more firmly, but isn't as harsh as a waterproof.

Tip: Want even more exaggerated lashes? Try applying a few coats of one mascara, then apply more coats of a different formula.

Christina Hendricks ~ Flare Magazine

... and on the 8th day God created
luscious, curvy, sexy reds
and made Christina Hendricks their queen...
Christina Hendricks, Flare Magazine

(The devil responded by creating Dina Lohan and sending her out to ruin the reds,
but she only managed to destroy one skinny one before fame-whoring her way
to Dr Phil and the Today show. But that's a whole different story)

The May 2013 issue of Canada's Flare Magazine
has a super charged shoot by photographer Max Abadian
deliciously styled by Lawren Sample,
showcasing the magnificence of Christina Hendricks
in full sex-bomb mode.

Spin class be damned.
