Celebrities With Choppy, Bob Length Hairstyles

I was on an editorial shoot this week, and one of the girls from the magazine absolutely rocked everyone's world with her fantastic new haircut.
It was super modern, fun and ultra chic.

She started the day with a choppy, bob length cut, looking smooth and shiny, and then part way through the day the hairstylist on set (who had actually done this stunning haircut the week before) took an oval wand curler to the cut and turned it into this super modern, beachy wave. It was fresh, it was fun and hands down out of all of us - magazine peeps, models and glam squad, she had the most fashion forward, sexy hair.

I am really attached to my long hair so I will probably never make the cut, but I had to start googling others who have.
Check out these celebrities with fabulous, choppy, bob length haircuts, and maybe this spring you too will go for the cut.

Adele totally stole the show at the 2012 Grammys.

Her performance was spectacular.
She looked amazing
in my opinion,
the best hair and makeup of the night.

I love her retro-Dusty Springfield-esque vibe

Adele has a Vogue cover hitting this month too.
Shot by Mert and Marcus
and styled by Tonne Goodman.
She is luscious, beautiful, curvy-girl sex- bomb
and straight up fabulous.

Angelina Jolie Marie Claire January 2012

Friday morning gratuitous fabulosity.

Angelina Jolie Behind The Lens

I love Angie.
She's got that unbelievably gorgeous face that just won't quit.

Angelina Jolie by Alexei Hay

She's clever. She's worldly.
By not playing to the Hollywood PR machine she transcends it.
And she's just incredibly interesting.

This article premiered in December,
so its not new,
but I just got around to reading it this week,
so its new to me.
And maybe you.

Check out these divine images of the fabulous Angelina Jolie

"He expanded my life in ways I never imagined. We built a family.
He is not just the love of my life, he is my family..."

Lulu Powers Party Planning

I just got back from spending a few days in Hollywood, where all work aside, I got to go to some completely fabulous parties.

Lulu Powers is one of Hollywood's premiere celebrity party planners and caterers. Her events have a very distinct flair to them, and thanks to her gorgeous book, Lulu Powers From Food To Flowers, they are also quite duplicatable.
One of the events I was at this week was a Lulu Powers inspired event. This got me thinking (over several of her famous Bambootinis) now that we are in the summer party season, that some of you may be interested in her tips for how to throw a last minute party.

Lulu Powers From Food To Flowers is my entertaining bible. I constantly pull ideas from her book, whether it is flower arrangements in my house, cool drinks to serve at my pool parties, or fantastic finger foods that keep people talking for months to come.
If you are new to entertaining, or if it feels overwhelming to you, Lulu has lists of what to keep in your pantry for last minute entertaining, timelines for how to structure your day so that everything runs smoothly, even creative serving ideas.
On her blog, amongst other things, you can find playlists to download for your party. Its fabulous!

Here are a couple of ideas for a little impromptu summer bash a la Lulu.

Flowers
Bypass fussy arrangements in favor of plants that live in your garden. Try positioning low bowls of one color flower offset with moss on tables and shelves at a variety of different heights.

Sweet and Spicy Tacos

Lulu's recipe for sweet and spicy tacos is both quick and easy, and everyone loves them! (you'll find it in her book on page 232)
She also has delicious recipes for chips and dips that are not only divine, but make your event so memorable.

Watermelon

In hot weather you can't beat icy cold wedges of watermelon for dessert.
Sprinkle with sea salt, a dash of lime and a pinch of cayenne pepper.

Lulu's book has some fantastic recipes for her signature cocktails too.
I haven't put a cocktail recipe on the blog for a while, but this one is refreshing and totally perfect for a summer get together.

The Lulu Powers Key Lime Martini

1 cup pineapple juice
3 tablespoons Torani vanilla syrup
3 tablespoons sweet and sour mix
juice of one lime
1 cup vodka (I use Grey Goose)
Jolly Rancher Lollipops

Shake the pineapple juice, syrup, sweet and sour mix, lime juice and vodka in a cocktail shaker with ice.
Serve in martini glasses garnished with a Jolly Rancher Lollipop.

(or make a carafe of them and place next to a bowl of crushed ice, and let your guests pour their own!)

You can find Lulu Powers From Food To Flowers in bookstores, or for instant gratification, here is the Amazon link.
Make sure you check out her blog, Living A La Lulu

Kate Winslet for St John

Oscar winning actress Kate Winslet is the new face of St John.

Following in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Gisele Bundchen, Winslet will now front the luxury brand's ad campaigns.

The St John Fall 2011 campaign was shot in a retro movie theater in Jersey City by famed photog Craig McDean.

Winslet looks exquisite.

“They want to keep it looking like me and not have it look like me pretending to be a model wearing these clothes,” said Winslet of the concept. “I’m obviously not a model. I’m not the size of a model. I don’t have the face of a model or the shape of a model.”

How To Choose The Right Hair Style For Your Face Shape

Having trouble deciding which hairstyle is right for you?
Many of us will see a gorgeous haircut on a celebrity or a friend, but when we try to copy it on ourselves it looks nothing short of goofy. Or hideous.

So here's the 411 on how to choose a hairstyle.

First up find out which face shape you have. Stand in front of a mirror, pull all your hair off your face and look at the width of your cheekbones, the length of your face from the highest point to your chin, and the width from temple to temple, jaw to jaw.

Typically you will fall into one of the following categories:

Diamond Shape
Slightly more pointy chin, narrow forehead and wider cheekbones
Look for styles that are narrow at the cheekbones and wider at the forehead. Add a little more fullness at the crown if required.

Actress Kim Raver has a Diamond face shape

Heart Shape:
This face shape has a more narrow chin and a broad forehead. The cheekbones are very visible. This great shape lets you choose from shorter cuts, like the pixie, a short layered cut, or a short ear length bob.

Beautiful Victoria Beckham has a heart shaped face
Naomi Campbell's perfect face is a heart shape

A shoulder length layered cut, with the bangs swept to the side flatters the heart shaped face and fills out the chin. Other fabulous styles include a layered bob with extra volume and outward flicks at chin level and  asymmetric cuts are also flattering heart-shaped faces.
Just avoid blunt bangs, or too much hair pulled back off the face.

Oval Shape:
You'll see a high forehead and narrow, slightly rounded chin.

Julia Roberts oval face shape

This is the most balanced face shape and almost perfect for any type of hair style. Basically no matter what you do you will look gorgeous.

Rectangle Shape:
Normally you will see an almost equal width across the temples, the cheekbones and the jaw, as well as a slightly longer face.

Gwyneth Paltrow rectangular face shape

Kate Bosworth rectangular face shape
The most flattering styles are like chin or shoulder-length cuts with a fringe that hides the long forehead.  Long straight hair accentuates the length of the face, so you need some movement to break it up, ideally bringing in a little softness and roundness.

Round Shape:
You'll see a wide, short forehead, full jaw and chin, and an overall roundness.

Note the difference in Kate Winslet's round face shape when the hairstyle is softened and gets some movement

The round shape normally makes the cheeks appear wider. Try to keep the length below the chin and add some fullness on top. A soft cut with sophisticated, face framing that curve to the sides is very slimming. Soft curls will also flatter the frame of a round face. Side swept bangs are very flattering, and break up the roundness.
Avoid bobs and chin or jaw length cuts, as they can accentuate the round look and make your head look like a ball.

Square Shape:

You will see a wide, short forehead and square jaw. The main difference from the rectangular face shape is the shorter length of the face.

Go for graduated layers with some volume at crown, soft curls, side swept bangs. Avoid cuts that end at chin or jaw length, and look for a style that has some movement.

Triangular Shape:
This face shape is the opposite of a heart shaped face. Picture a heart upside down. This face shape has a wider jawline and your face gets gradually narrower as you go up. You can wear a shorter hair style to balance this out.
Try styles with more fullness at the forehead that get gradually narrower at the chin.

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model Kathy Ireland has a triangular face shape

Most short hair cuts work for this type of face. Avoid styles with too much volume at the top.

Look for distinctive features like your nose, cheekbones, or jaw line. You can then decide to downplay or highlight these features with the style you choose. Try to pick hairstyles that enhance your best features while camouflaging any flaws.

Adding color can really enhance your cut. Highlights and lowlights can direct the eye along the shape of your new hairdo and really bring out the best in your features, as well as totally compliment and light up your skin.
