The Magic Of Facial Oil Products

Chances are if you're looking for younger, dewier, more radiant skin, one of the last things you're probably thinking of adding to
your skin care regime is oil.

image via www.macsmagazine.com
But it just so happens that oils are the biggest thing out there when it comes to moisture boosting, wrinkle fighting, inflammation reducing and anti aging.
Super boosted with high performance additives such as
peptides, vitamin C, and retinols they are able to deliver
active ingredients without irritating the surface of the skin.
Standing alone they super hydrate and boost the skin,
giving it the most delicious glow.

For years I've been loving oil cleansers,
particularly the Shu Uemura cleansing oils.
Shu Uemura Cleansing Oils
Cleansing oils both dissolve makeup and lift away impurities, without stripping the skin. They are fabulous for oily complexions too. If you think about what happens when you mix water and oil - they separate. Want to lift away excess oil? Use a specially formulated cleansing oil designed for an oily complexion, and you've struck gold.

These days I'm using the CitriCleanser cleansing oil
from Scottsdale based EstheCeuticals.

Skin care oils can be used alone, on top of serums, or mixed with moisturizers. They run the gamut from simple oils, such as Rhonda Allison's Grape Seed Oil to more complex oils.

One of the pioneers of luxury face oils is fashion stylist Linda Rodin.
Frustrated that she couldn't find skin care that worked, she made up a brew of her favorite oils (including sweet almond, argan and apricot seed) in a coffee cup in her bathroom. The change in her skin was visibly remarkable.
Rodin Olio Lusso went on to become one of the most sought after oils in the fashion industry, by makeup artists and models alike,
and has sold more than 50,000 bottle worldwide.

There are now so many different facial oils available on the market,
targeting every conceivable skin need. You can use them under foundation to make it hold and glow all day, you can use them to keep the skin hydrated. There are oils to tighten pores, others to balance sebum, some to defy aging, some to keep skin firm - the list is endless.

In my new skin care regime from EstheCeuticals I'm using their Skin Seal Ceramide Serum, which some days I use alone as a moisturizer, some days I add to my moisture equation. Most days I like to allow it to settle into my skin  before I apply foundation, and on shoots I will apply a drop or two to my model or actress's face prior to foundation, just to make everything glide on smoothly and add a radiance to the skin.

Whichever facial oils you add to your skincare program you will see an almost immediate and discernible improvement to your complexion. Because that's just how they work.

My Sicilian Obsession ~ Forza d'Agro'

When I was first planning the Sicilian leg of my most recent Italian adventure, all my Italiani were raving to me about how fantastic Sicily is, and how it is the best place in the world, the best food in the world, and how it has the best people in the world.

Now, allowing for the fact that with their sexy accents I would happily listen to them recite the phone book, front to back, all day long, I was always delighted to hear them wax lyrical about the little island at the toe of the boot.
"Cor-eeen-ahhh, you weel loff eet"

But just as Americans get passionately patriotic over the stars and bars, I assumed my Italians were just attaching an equal patriotic fervor to their fashion, their food and their Sicily. I knew I'd love the place, but had no idea how hard I would absolutely fall in love with it.
And how my Italiani have laughed at me over that one.

Forza d'Agro', Sicily

Anyway, one of the fabulous little places I found by accident while in Sicily, was the lovely little Forza D'Agro'.
Situated on the coast between Taormina and Messina, Forza D'Agro' is not typically found in tourist books. (which generally means I'm going to love it).

starting the day with cappuccino at Il Girasole

I only found out about it because a couple of locals were helping me plan out my day over toes-in-the-sand breakfast cappuccino.

They totally shanghai'd everything I was planning on doing, and instead came up with all kinds of fantastic places to go see, experience and eat at. (remember, Sicilians are incredibly warm, fun loving, friendly people). And they love to give you the inside scoop on the best local places to hit. No doubt owned by family members, but you are welcomed with open arms, and I adore that.

The drive along the coast from Taormina/Mazzeo/Letojanni to Forza d'Agro' is gorgeous and easy. Which is just great because the drive up the hill is like the drive up the hill to Ravello. On acid. Super steep hairpin bends that double back on themselves, perfect if you're fearless and if you're driving a stick shift. By the time you've reached the top you have earned a robust glass of local Sicilian wine.

The Ionian from Forza d'Agro', Sicily

With ancient buildings and stone paved lanes that are impassable by car, this little town has become the backdrop for many movies over the years, in fact you'll recognize parts of Forza d'Agro' from The Godfather.
Cathedral Forza d'Agro'

This entire area has such a rich and wild history, from the Sicani to the Siculi, the Greeks to the Romans, The Byzantines to the Spanish and however many others along the way, so many have come and conquered and left their mark, creating a society and a land that is just completely intriguing and complex.

Forza d'Agro' Sicily

As you can see we got all kinds of weather that day. It started out gorgeous, some rain came through briefly, and then the sun came back out.
Forza d'Agro' is tiny and doesn't take much time to have a good look around. There are so many lovely little towns all the way along the coast to stop and visit, all with staggering views across the Ionian Sea, amazing little local eateries, artisan stores and plenty of interesting things to see and do, most of them far from the madding crowds.

Ciao from the top of the world. Well the top of the path anyway ;)

How To Get Your Hair Ready For Fall - The 3 C's

There is no time like the end of summer
to take drastic measures to rehab the hairdo.
image L'Oreal of Paris

After a long hot summer of taking a beating from sand and surf,
sea water and chlorine, hot air and air conditioning,
and the burning, damaging rays themselves,
your hair (and believe me, mine) needs some serious TLC
to take it into autumn.
Which, by the way, with the advent of the glorious
September issues, is the equivalent of the New Year in fashion.

And hair TLC is all about the 3 C's.

1. Make The Cut

This is the time of the year to get drastic.
End the summer/start the fall not with the usual little trim, but with the big cut. Have your stylist take off all the damaged, trashed out hair - everything that he/she tells you needs to go.
Hanging on to the old, beat up tresses does you no favors, it just looks bad. Going a bit shorter than you planned can be nerve wracking, but it will grow back quickly, and will look far more luscious.

2. Changing The Color.
Everyone's color needs reworking at the end of summer.
I'm a firm believer that every single head of hair benefits from color, with the exception perhaps of natural blue blacks and natural white blondes.

At the end of summer blondes that have become too brassy or too iridescent need toning down. Platinums and high blondes look better converted to more autumnal blondes.

Reds can add some deeper low lights, brownies also benefit from toning and adding chestnuts and lowlights.

Everybody wins with color.
Your best bet is to go see your colorist and get some ideas.

Freewheeling it with a box of color from the drugstore seldom works out that well.

3. Conditioning

There are a myriad of conditioning treatments available, from in salon processes to at home masks.
The trick is to get the right product or treatment for your specific hair type and needs. You don't want to weigh your hair down too much, or leave it feeling greasy. If you have thick hair or coarse hair you need products that pack an extra punch.
Plenty of hair products don't penetrate the hair shaft and literally just run down the drain, while others can coat the hair and leave it looking and feeling dirty.
Ask your hairstylist to recommend the best product or service to refresh, rejuvenate and revitalize your hair.
